Bates Colliery, known locally as Bates Pit, was rooted in Blyth's mining heritage, with the Bates name tied to coal leases as far back as the 1500's. Modern workings began around 1904 & expanded with new shafts in the 1930's, operated by the Cowpen Coal Company until nationalism brought it under the National Coal Board in 1947.

The pit was a major employer for decades but closed in 1986 during the decline of the Northumberland coalfield. Its closure left a deep mark on Blyth, though the site has since been earmarked for redevelopment, with archives and photographs preserving its place in the town's coal exporting past.
